Me: What do you love about the opening scene of your book?

Sonny: I love the tension that is always present between Sonny and his grandsire, Grandpap the wizard.  Both of them are wily and tricky, and both are wary of the schemes of the other.  In the opening scene, Grandpap is chastising Sonny, telling Sonny to marry and settle down.  Grandpap would dearly love to be rid of Sonny, to have his grandson move out and live elsewhere, no matter who Sonny chooses as a bride.  So Grandpap talks of Sonny finding a bride, even though he has despaired of such an event happening.

Me: What is one awesome thing about where you’re at in life right now?

Sonny: I can be creative in my writing, spinning outrageous yarns without fear of consequences. Then in my day job, I can pass myself off as being completely normal.  Which I am, in case you are curious.  If you were to encounter me, you would think me the most normal and well-adjusted person you’d ever known.

Me: My favorite part of a book is what the characters say to each other. What is your favorite exchange of dialogue in your book and why do you love it?

Sonny: It is the exchange between Sonny and Ariella after she has him thrown into the stocks for the second time.  He is beginning to think her untrustworthy.  And Ariella?  She is having thoughts about using him before tossing him away.

“Why do you hate me?” I gasped when finally able to talk.

“Hate you?  Why, Sonny, dear, what makes you think I have anything in my heart for you except love—lust and love?”  She leaned over my bare back and traced a fingernail up and over the curve of my rump, with her nail slicing open my skin, stretched tight as it was by the knotting of my leg muscles.  “Is this not what you wanted?  Is this not what you secretly desired?  I shall hurt you in the most delicious ways, cause you to ache and throb all over.  Then I will give you the release you so fervently desire, so that your ultimate cries of pleasure shall rip the very leaves off the trees, leaving a vast circle of barren branches around us, as if autumn had arrived very, very early.”

“Oh, yes, go on,” I urged, having difficulty in getting out the words.  “Defoliate me!”

But Ariella paused, with one hand squeezing my right butt cheek like a great owl seizing a plump woodchuck, with only the tips of her sleek talons piercing my tender flesh.  “What could I have done to give you even the slightest thought that I might dislike you?”

“What do you mean?” I hissed through clenched teeth, a string of drool stretching from my lips and dropping to the ground.  “You drugged me and had me thrown into the stocks!  Do you not remember?  You slipped enough potion into my ale to kill a wild stallion.  It is fortuitous that my constitution is so impervious to harm, or even now you would be putting me into a coffin—instead of stocks.”

“Oh, no, you have it all wrong,” Ariella declared.  “The only thing I added to your ale was a handful of crushed ever-ready leaf.”

“What is that?”

“Ever-ready leaf?  Why, it is a herb that gives a man extraordinary … potency.”  She gave me another squeeze as she talked, admiring the effect of the medicine.  “Few know about it, but I have long known of its power.”

“Do you have any more?”  I could not keep a hopeful note from my voice.

“More?”  She snorted in amusement.  “I have a whole garden of ever-ready leaf.”

Me: Do you read your own books once they’re published? Why or why not?

Sonny: No, I don’t.  Why not?  Because I see things I could have done differently, such as an extra word or phrase or think of a better word to replace a word I already used.  And then I feel frustrated and slightly embarrassed.  I find it better to not look, as I have already read the story many times.

Excerpt:

“Tell me where you hid the amulet.” Her lips touched my ear lobe and I almost lost control of my spleen. “Confess your theft, and I will reward you, will complete the passionate interlude left unconsummated last night.”

“For you, my dear, I would confess anything.”

“Go on, do tell.”

“I confess my desire for you, my passion is aroused by your touch.”

“That is not what I want to hear. Confess you took the amulet, and tell where you hid it.”

“I will.” My heartbeats pounded in my ears. “But first, caress my trouser weasel, stroke it as you were doing last night.”

“Oh, no,” she cooed into my ear. “You tell me where the chicken foot is, and then you will be rewarded.”

I smiled to myself, despite my predicament. Such moments in life were few and far between, moments when fools thought they had the better of me, then discovered they needed to curry my favour, instead of the other way around. “My dear, I will confess nothing. Abler men than you—well, men, at least—have tried to break my spirit, and all have failed.”

“Where is the chicken foot?” she hissed, grasping my ear and twisting it. The pain was sharp and delicious.

“I do not know!” Strangely, it was true.

“Liar! Tell me, or I shall kick you.”

“Kick me if you must, but I refuse to tell you.” I fervently hoped she would carry through her threat. “What will you do with the wedding gifts? I shall tell the people of your village it was all your idea.”

“Oh, my! Dear me!” Ariella responded, mock fear dripping from her lovely lips. “Do you think they will believe you, a stranger, over a beautiful and innocent young girl?” She punctuated the question by kicking me in the gut.

“That did not hurt,” I lied. “Throw your whole body into it. Do you have a pair of pointy shoes? Kicking me with pointy shoes might at least discomfit me…while you are kicking, at least. The pain fades almost immediately and you shall never get the truth out of me at this rate.”

About the Author:

Sonny Zae lives in a small town on the edge of reality.  His only remarkable characteristic is imagination.  He ignored his grade school teacher’s repeated admonitions to stop daydreaming and get to work.

Sonny’s book WIZARD SEEKING TROPHY BRIDE, is also available on Kindle.  It is a story about the exceptional difficulties involved in finding love and happiness for an elderly and strange wizard, not to mention the difficulties of dealing with an elderly relative—an elderly relative who is also a wizard.

It’s been a real treat hosting you today, Sonny! I wish you all the best with your story! Friends, thank you so much for visiting and have a great rest of your week. Happy Reading!

Always love,

Carlene Love♥
